That's a bit different than being homosexual. Most homosexuals consider themselves to be of the correct gender, they just are attracted to the same gender. However, transgenders are born thinking they're the opposite gender. I could give a biology lesson on the developing fetus, but I won't (thank me later). In essence, transgenders are born with the wrong brain structure for their body type. So to answer your question, his problem wasn't with what gender he fancied, but the gender he saw in himself. That's why the film didn't get into whether he liked girls or boys.
