Okay.. now it's my turn.

I gave this movie a 4. I think it's a really good film and all, but it definitely is the weakest of the trilogy in my opinion. I liked the use of silence throughout the film and thought it was appropriate for the most part, but it did kinda make for a sleepy viewing experience. Ultimately, Mr. Vengeance just doesn't have the beauty and excitement that makes Lady Vengeance and Oldboy so much fun to watch again and again!

I think it's important to note that this is the first of the trilogy, and that the director had time to hone his skills more with each successive film. I would never say that this was a poor or even mediocre film at all. Park Chan-wook is definitely a very talented director and it shows even in this first Vengeance film!

The acting is of course quite brilliant. From the disgruntled former employee, to the detective, to the daughter, to the President of the company, to the Deaf man and his girlfriend, and his sister.... everyone was great in this movie. Of course, Song Kang-ho stands out as the best of the bunch... but I think that's a surprise to no one!

Aesthetically this movie probably suffers. It just isn't a pretty film. In fact, it's quite ugly... and I think it's meant to be. As Kat pointed out, there is no hope at the end of this film. It's a tragedy in every sense! I suppose you could say the same for Oldboy though, and this movie is nowhere near the visual stunner that Oldboy was. I think it's the aesthetics alone that make me give this film a 4 instead of a 5 really... even if the ugliness is appropriate given the subject matter.

Anyway, I still highly recommend this film. If you're turned off by violence it wouldn't be for you, but I reckon the title alone would deter you for that matter!
